DVD Information

There possibly isn't an album in history that is as genre defining as NIRVANA's "Nevermind." Released in 1991, it single-handedly was responsible for the birth of what became to be known as grunge and has gone on to sell over 8 million copies in the US alone.

"Nevermind" was the second album from the Seattle trio and the first on the DGC label (it's predecessor "Bleach" was released on the Sub Pop label). It was produced by Butch Vig (also the drummer for the band Garbage) and mixed by Andy Wallace.

Nirvana's surviving members Krist Novoselic (bass) and Dave Grohl (drums) talk candidly about their past, the recording of Nevermind and about Kurt Cobain and the legacy that he has left behind. Also featured are exclusive interviews with the likes of Garry Gersh (A&R DGC Records), Butch Vig, Jonathan Ponneman and Nils Bernstein (Sub Pop Records), Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Jack Endino, and many more.

Bonus features:

Drain You - the story behind the making of the track.
Going To Record In LA - The story behind why the band recorded Nevermind in LA.
Dave Grohl Joins Nirvana - The story of how Dave Grohl came to join Nirvana.
Polly (Live) - Polly live in concert.
Nevermind - The Album Sleeve - The story of the album cover including interviews with the cover star.

Track Listing (featuring excerpts from):

1. Smells Like Teen Spirit

i love this dvd so much it makes me sick!!
I have to admit, I bought this DVD with low expectations. I'm a rabid Nirvana fan who followed the band on tour in 1993, but admittedly, at this juncture in history, I figured that everything that could possibly be said about "Nevermind" has already been said.

Surprisingly, I was wrong! Altho' this DVD trots out all the usual suspects (Bleach producer Jack Endino, Sub Pop chief Jonathan Poneman, Cobain biographer Charles Cross, Nevermind producer Butch Vig, Rolling Stone journalist David Fricke, "Teen Spirit" video director Sam Bayer), they still had fresh insights to add to this already much analyzed album.

Best yet, surving Nirvana members Dave Grohl and Krist Noveselic provide their lengthiest comments to date upon Nirvana's legacy. Altho' neither has been silent on the subject of Nirvana over the years, they also haven't been particularly discursive either. Here, Dave & Krist talk at length about the making of "Nevermind" and the creation of the individual tracks, offering interesting reminisces about a band on the brink of success. Dave offers a particularly funny and lengthy anecdote about a trip he and Kurt took to Los Angeles in Kurt's beat up Datsun. And Krist adds fascinating details about a band who had just signed a mega-record contract, but had to play a show in L.A. just to earn gas money to make it to Butch Vig's Madison, Wisconsin studios.

The most fascinating parts of the DVD, however, feature "Nevermind" producer Butch Vig behind the sound boards, actually deconstructing the tracks and showing how all the individual elements were pieced together to create the sonic tapestry that became "Nevermind." Hearing the drums and guitars stripped from a track like "Teen Spirit," and then watching Vig recompile the track with double-tracked vocals from Kurt and then bass and guitars and drums is particularly interesting.

The bonus features here are equally excellent. A lengthy segment is included on the construction of "Drain You"'s unique guitar sound, with Vig demonstrating how he pieced 5 or 6 seperate guitar tracks together, and also noting how he tricked Kurt into performing the same song so many times. And the chapter on the album cover is fascinating too, including an interview with now-15-year-old Elden Spencer, the baby featured on the cover. "Dave Grohl Joins the Band" is perhaps the best segment, showing how the addition of the multi-talented future Foo Fighters frontman put the band over the top.

For those who still feel a sort of melancholy whenever Nirvana is discussed, I'll add a final note to this review: the words "Courtney Love" and "suicide" are never mentioned at all. And those omissions manage to keep this excellent DVD from bogging down into teary reminisces. Instead, all you are left with is a truly joyous celebration of perhaps the most perfect album ever made.

Hello, hello, hello, how low...?
Another solidly-made, thoroughly interesting entry in the "Classic Album" series, this time focusing on Nirvana's landmark album, "Nevermind."

The doc goes through the tracks with in-depth analysis, and also talks to Grohl, Novoselic, Butch Vig and others.

There's not much else to say about the piece, except that if you love Nirvana, you'll probably find this completely absorbing.

And check the deleted scenes, too; I was surprised at how much important stuff was there. The documentary itself is only 48 min., so I'm not sure why they cut out scenes such as the analysis of "Drain You"; a section about Grohl's joining of the band (it's tough to overstate the importance of that addition to the band); a funny anecdote about the band's stymied attempt to travel from Seattle to L.A. to begin pre-production; and a look at the cover art that actually talks to the baby on the album cover -- now a likable and very hip-looking teenager.

This installment in the series is one of the better ones.

Pretty interesting
This video is a nice review of the making of Nirvana's most commercially successful album. There are some rather in-depth demonstrations of how the songs were mixed, and interviews with Krist Novaselic (looking a lot older I might add) and Dave Grohl. One of the best things about it is the way you hear the songs in a sort of deconstructed way. (Butch Vig?) strips the songs down to just one guitar and one vocal track, and then you witness as more tracks are added, until it matches the version that's on your cd at home. It's very interesting from the point of view of a musician who has never experienced the mixing process. It's kind of like being taken back in time to when the album was being made. But one of the best things about it is that Courtney Love is never mentioned! Maybe Dave Grohl does once, I can't remember. Regardless, if you love Kurt Cobain and the legacy of Nirvana, get this video, I doubt you'll be disappointed.
