Incesticide (album) (compilation)

Incesticide
Editorial Reviews
Originally intended as a stopgap record following the massive success of Nirvana's Nevermind, the archival Incesticide album has taken on an added significance in light of subsequent events. Consisting of outtakes, demos, non-album singles, and live BBC sessions, it's a fascinating if less-than-truly essential listening experience. Highlights include the rip-roaring childhood memoir "Sliver" and its caustic companion (from a pre-Nevermind single) "Dive." There's also a brilliant cover of the Vaselines' "Molly's Lips." Particularly harrowing, however, are Kurt Cobain's liner notes, which at times sound eerily like his suicide note, deriding the fame and money that came upon him like a tsunami, and ultimately wiped him out. --Daniel Durchholz
Incesticide is a compilation album of rare songs, b-sides and studio outtakes by the American grunge band Nirvana. It was released on December 14, 1992 in Europe, and December 15, 1992 in the U.S. The album reached number 39 in the Billboard Top 200.
Six of the fifteen songs were unreleased at the time ("Hairspray Queen", "Aero Zeppelin", "Big Long Now", "Been A Son", "(New Wave) Polly" and "Aneurysm"). Different versions of "Been a Son" and "Aneurysm" had been released on the Blew EP (1989) and the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" single (1991), respectively.
* "Dive" and "Sliver" were released on the "Sliver" single in 1990.
* "Stain" was released on the Blew EP.
* The three cover songs, "Turnaround" (Devo), "Molly's Lips" and "Son of a Gun" (The Vaselines) were released on the Hormoaning EP in 1992.
* "Mexican Seafood" appeared on the Teriyaki Asthma Volume 1 compilation (1989), and "Beeswax" appeared on the Kill Rock Stars compilation (1991).
* "Downer" appears on Nirvana's debut album Bleach (1989). However, the song was first included in 1992 once Sub Pop began CD pressings of the album, and even then only on U.S. copies, which is why it is included on Incesticide.

Love you so much, it makes me sick
Have no illusions: this is an odds and sods collection. It doesn't hang together as an album, and it sags noticably in the middle.
But as testimony to the generosity and eclecticism of Kurt Cobain, this album is essential. Face it, how many of us would have heard of the Raincoats or the Vaselines or the Meat Puppets without Kurt? Kurt's liner notes are nearly the best part of the album (and the best reason to buy this instead of downloading it for free). Kurt's wistful ruminations upon fame and punk rock are a little eerie in light of his suicide, but at the same time, there's a sort of exuberance in his new found ability to sing the praises of the bands that so influenced him. It's also sort of endearing to see him sign himself "Kurt (the blonde one)" because at the time no one knew Kurt from Krist from Dave.
Highlights: "Aneurysm" and "Sliver." Either song would have fit perfectly on "Nevermind," and the version of "Aneurysm" here is vastly superior to the recording found on the "Hormoaning" EP. The remaining tracks are a mixed bag of covers (including a wonderful version of the Vaselines' "Molly's Lips"), generic rockers ("Stain", "Dive"), and experimental noodling that you're probably going to fast forward through after a couple of listens. Stick around to the end however. "Aneurysm" is one of those candidates for BEST SONG OF ALL TIME. I've listened to it a thousand times in a row, and I still want to scream along every time: "Come on over and do the twist!"
Incesticide
This is a hotch potch collection of songs that suffers from the usual afflictions of b-sides/outtakes/rarities albums in that its inconsistent, jumbled, random and lacks flow and structure. The highlights here are of course 'Sliver' and the covers of the Vaselines songs 'Molly's Lips' and 'Son Of A Gun'. For the most part this is far more in keeping with the Bleach era sound than Nevermind or even In Utero. Mostly because the songs originate in the pre nevermind era, which would make sense.
The rest ranges from bad to good. The bad being 'Beeswax' the best of the good being 'Aneurysm'. Its mostly harsh punkish and sludgey, far more worthy of the description of being grunge that the relatively clean cut Nevermind. If you're a fan you'll get this, if you just like Nevermind and Unplugged In New York, then you'd probably be better off skipping it.
Eclectic assortment
Incesticide is a very unique album, or compilation, of strange and cool songs. No it doesn't really have a flow, but that doesn't stop it from being a different kind of listening experience. Some of the songs are really funny, others are top-notch, and some are just disgusting.
~The Songs~
1. DIVE- upbeat song off Nirvana's second single (Sliver/Dive); reminds me of school ("pick me, pick me, yeah")
2. SLIVER- masterpiece song, great use of repetition
3. STAIN- a little strange, one of the lesser songs
4. BEEN A SON- about kurt's sister, pretty good song
5. TURNAROUND (Devo cover)- the lyrics may not have been written by the band, but they sure put a twist of their own humor in
6. MOLLY'S LIPS (Vaselines cover)- upbeat, the original is great too
7. SON OF A GUN- (Vaselines cover)- reminds me of childhood
8. (NEW WAVE) POLLY- Polly is a masterpiece song, but I don't think this version is very fitting, it's more suited to a slow acoustic
9. BEESWAX- from the early days, slightly obscene and overall a pretty bad song, the lyrics are really dumb
10. DOWNER- from Bleach, the lyrics here are interesting "hand out lobotomies to save little families"
11. MEXICAN SEAFOOD- a toss up between which is more disgusting, this or Beeswax, this song is sick
12. HAIRSPRAY QUEEN- love the vocals
13. AERO ZEPPELIN- "all the kids will eat it up, if it's packaged properly"
14. BIG LONG NOW- slow, low song, eerie quality makes it very different sounding
15. ANEURYSM- the best for last, b-side for Teen Spirit along with Even in His Youth, both songs are outstanding
