Move over Elvis, Kurt Cobain is now the king
WHEN Elvis Presley died, someone cynically but memorably described his death as a “shrewd career move” — the King was demonstrably over the hill but the sales generated by his demise were enormous.Figures from Forbes magazine suggest that a shotgun may have been an equally useful career tool for the grunge star Kurt Cobain in 1994. Cobain, whose band made only three studio albums, has just toppled Elvis as the world’s highest-earning dead celebrity.
The Nirvana singer and guitarist, a grunge hero whose suicide went largely unnoticed at the time by anyone aged over 35, “earned” an estimated £26.3 million last year, more than £4 million more than the King.
