Single Description
"Lithium" is a song by the grunge band Nirvana. It originally appeared on and was the third single from their breakthrough album Nevermind. The lyrics were written by Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain.
The name of the song is often attributed to the usage of lithium salts as mood stabilizers. Because of this the lyrics are often interpreted as describing bipolar disorder. Cobain is said to have had bipolar disorder, which may have led to the writing of the song "Lithium". Still, there is much disagreement about the exact meaning and interpretation of it.
In the Nevermind press kit, Kurt said this about the song: "People who are secluded for so long go insane, and as a last resort they often use religion to keep alive. In the song, the guy's lost his girl and his friends and he's brooding. He's decided to find God before he kills himself. It's hard for me to understand the need for a vice like that, but I can appreciate it too. People need vices."

Great single all the way around.
The song "Lithium" is probably one of the most familiar Nirvana songs of all time, even to casual listeners. However, it is one of their best, and I for one, love this song, becuase it is one of the best representations of Nirvana's essence. One of the big selling points of this single is the fact that it includes all of the lyrics on Nevermind. I like the fact that it has these lyrics; I find them insightful.
Unlike what some people have said, I think the two b-sides are awesome. The live "Been a Son" is represented in fine form here, and is taken from a great show (the 10/31/91 Seattle homecoming show, which happens to be one of my favorites [I own it on CD]). "Curmudegon" is a demo recorded in the spring of '92, and its raw quality sounds quite unlike anything on Nevermind ("Lithium" included). In fact, "Curmudegon" heavily foreshadows the sound of In Utero.
In short, I would recommend this to people who already own Nevermind and In Utero, and are looking to gain further insight into the band. I would actually recommend getting this as part of the "Singles Box" (if you can find it cheaply), as it contains all of the singles and b-sides from Nevermind and In Utero. This single by itself, however, is still pretty damn good.
Lyrics To Nevermind and 3 great songs!
The most important thing to know about this single is that includes the complete lyrics to their breakthrough album NEVERMIND. Especially helpful given the songs cryptic nature. Lithium is one of the best singles from that LP, Curmedgeon is a a great outtake and Been a Son is a strong live track, making this (along with Smells Like Teen Spirit) an indispensable Nirvana single. When, oh when is Geffen going to open their vaults and release the complete Nirvana Box Set?
