Box Set Description


With the Lights Out is a box set, containing 3 CDs and 1 DVD, from the American grunge band Nirvana. It was released in November 2004. The title refers to the line "with the lights out, it's less dangerous" from the hugely successful "Smells Like Teen Spirit" single.

Rumors of a posthumous Nirvana box set, or anthology, first surfaced in the mid-1990s, not long after the death of the band's singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain in April 1994. It was eventually announced that a 45-track box set would be released in September 2001, to mark the 10th anniversary of the band's breakthrough album, Nevermind, but a legal battle between Cobain's widow, Courtney Love, and surviving Nirvana members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic, precluded this from happening.

NIRVANA



Even though Kurt Cobain committed suicide in 1994, Nirvana continues to head the grunge family tree. Cobain’s widow, the actress and musician Courtney Love, recently sold 25 per cent of her stake in the band for a reported £29 million. The deal paves the way for the group’s songs to be open to licensing offers. The band’s drummer Dave Grohl has achieved considerable success with his new group, Foo Fighters — in which he plays guitar.

MUDHONEY



A grunge band before the term had been invented, Mudhoney originally signed to Seattle's influential Sub Pop label. Released a new album, Under a Billion Suns, in March.

SOUNDGARDEN



Seattle’s most famous Black Sabbath enthusiasts split in 1997. The band’s singer, Chris Cornell, now fronts Audioslave alongside former members of the agit-prop group Rage Against the Machine.

SONIC YOUTH



The godparents of grunge, formed in 1981, have outlasted all changes in musical taste without a change in line-up. Their new album Rather Ripped is released in June, which is when the band also head out on the road in the US with Pearl Jam.

ALICE IN CHAINS



Lead singer Layne Staley died of a heroin overdose in April 2000. The group has now reformed for a tour with a new vocalist, William DuVall.

Cobain ‘wanted to quit Nirvana’

Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain planned to leave the band and join wife Courtney Love's band Hole, according to a previously unseen interview.

"To tell you the truth, I would rather just quit my band and join Hole," Cobain is quoted as saying.

In the interview Cobain, who killed himself in April 1994, says he has more affinity with his wife's band.

The interview, originally intended for French TV, also sees Cobain talking about writing more acoustic music.

Cobain also mentioned his desire to move away from the grunge scene.
