Single Description
"In Bloom" is a song by the grunge band Nirvana. The song originally appeared on their 1991 breakthrough album, Nevermind, from which it was the fourth single in 1992. It would later appear on the band's greatest hits album, Nirvana in 2002.
Written by Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, the song was meant to be an insult to the many people who ignored the meanings behind songs. It was originally titled "Knows Not What It Means". Rumor had it that Cobain specifically wrote the song about his best friend, Dylan Carlson. The band had a dislike for arena rock, and were disgusted that some of those who listened to that form of music were now fans of their music. Many fans of Nirvana didn't understand Nirvana's songs, in part because many fans had trouble understanding Cobain's then-unusual vocals (a fact famously parodied in "Weird Al" Yankovic's song "Smells Like Nirvana"). Some fans were apathetic to the lyrical content of Nirvana's songs, and instead listened to their music for the melodies and instrumental content. Kurt stated himself, as seen in the video Live! Tonight! Sold Out!!, that 'Music comes first, lyrics are secondary'.
Given this, Nirvana was able to easily parody the less lyrically concerned fans in "In Bloom" without backlash. The song's lyrics, about an unintelligent man who doesn't understand what songs are about (according to the song's chorus: "He's the one/Who likes all our pretty songs/And he likes to sing along/And he likes to shoot his gun/But he knows not what it means... when I say yeah"), were accepted by fans whether they understood the meaning of the song or not. Ironically, some fans would even sing along to the lyrics at concerts, an activity that was also parodied in the song.

Essentially a greatest-hits collection with one previously unreleased song, "You Know You're Right," and producer Scott Litt's 1994 remix of "Pennyroyal Tea," Nirvana the album is nevertheless a welcome addition to the band's canon. Crisp, elegant liner notes by Rolling Stone writer David Fricke put us squarely in Kurt Cobain's mindset as he entered a Seattle studio in January 1994--a full two days later than expected--to record what would be his final session with Nirvana. The resulting "You Know You're Right" locates Cobain at the apogee of his disenfranchisement with tongue nevertheless planted firmly in cheek. Bawdy, raucous, and venomous, "You Know You're Right" could have been lifted from Nevermind. A mix of tracks from that album ("Smells Like Teen Spirit," "Come as You Are," "Lithium," and "In Bloom") sits opposite stuff from early EPs and the Bleach disc ("About a Girl," "Been a Son," and "Sliver"), plus two from the MTV Unplugged sessions and several more from In Utero. Nirvana was the third Nirvana album to be released following the death of singer/guitarist Kurt Cobain in April 1994, and the first to feature studio material. It contains the previously unreleased "You Know You're Right," a song recorded during the band's final studio session on January 30, 1994. The album also includes a brief selection of the band's more popular songs, culled mostly from 1991's Nevermind and 1993's In Utero, but also containing three pre-Nevermind songs and two recorded during the band's MTV Unplugged set in late 1993. Nirvana opened at #3 on the Billboard 200. The album has sold millions of copies worldwide.
Nirvana was released following the settlement of a long-standing legal dispute between Cobain's widow, Courtney Love, and surviving Nirvana members Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl. Much of the dispute centered around "You Know You're Right," which Novoselic and Grohl had wanted to release on a long-delayed Nirvana box set. However, Love blocked the song's release, and sued Novoselic and Grohl over control of Nirvana's legacy.
Love's lawsuit maintained that "You Know You're Right" was a "potential 'hit' of extraordinary artistic and commercial value." She believed that "You Know You're Right" would be "wasted" on a box set, and instead belonged on a single-disc compilation similar to the Beatles' 1. In September 2002, it was announced by the Nirvana camp that the lawsuit had been settled, and that "You Know You're Right" would be released on "Nirvana, a one-CD history of the band." This paved the way for the box set, With The Lights Out which was released two years later.
